When I was a kid, I always wanted to learn how to play the violin. Instead, I took piano lessons. It was okay but I didn't like it. Maybe because my piano teacher was a major ngo-ngo and she sometimes spanked my hands with a ruler. Or maybe I just hated the fact that I had to practice my pieces every night. I didn't even reach Grade 2. Poor soul. But in fairness, I can still play "Paru-Parung Bukid"... I think... Hehe! Or the "Blue Moon"... Classic!Even if I didn't enjoy piano much, at that time I started playing the piano, I learned to love Chopin and Pierre Buzon. I tried to go back and hit those keys but I had to accept that the piano didn't love me.
I thought the musical world turned its back against me, until I celebrated my 13th birthday. My dad gave me a guitar. I grabbed some songhits, learned how to press those chords and voila... I learned how to play the guitar and I started loving it so much! I even "idolized" Earl Klugh because he's such a great guitarist! Since then, I dreamed of being a rockstar... you know, performing live and in-front os so many people. Heck I don't mind.
Years have passed, our piano at home is so out-of-tune. I still get to play the guitar from time to time (especially in times of prayer... in case you don't know, I express my faith in music) but like lately, the dust bunnies are all over. And yet I still want to learn how to play the violin. I dunno if it's too late to learn or I'm just too tied-up with so many things but playing the violin is part of my "things to do in life" list.
In terms of pure violin, the best classical musicians ever for me is Antonio Vivaldi. His "Four Seasons" rocked 18th century. But as 3 centuries have passed by, classical violin has gone beyond the usual. As far as I know, Vanessa Mae revolutionized the techno-violin craze in Asia. Back then (like almost 10 years ago) she ruled the Asia-Pacific region and the charts of MTV Asia and Channel V. Plus she got killer abs. I think she's still big in the scene. She has turned global now. And she still has killer abs. Another chick that's rocking the non-conventional violin world is Lucia Micarelli. I read her in some magazine and I started downloading her songs. Omigosh she rocks! She fused classical and rock music. And she collaborated with fabulous bands and singers like Sting, Slash, David Bowie, Jethro Thull, Josh Groban (although I'm not a big fan and with all the rock singers, he's kinda lost in this category), Leigh Nash and many many more. My most favorite song ever is her version of Queen's Bohemian Rapshody. Two words: HAIR-RAISING! Ang galeng! And I just found out that she went here in Manila and played with Nyco Maca... shucks I missed it! I was in Bangkok and she was here. =( She performed in Embassy and the ticket was at Php950. Not bad but still, I missed it!!
In the brink of toxicity for today, my wishful thinking right now is.... What if I suddenly leave my job, study violin, fuzed some rock or house sounds and make it to the muzziccc industry??? Hehehe!! It's either I'll be a major flop or I'll rule the world... Hehehehehe!! But still, I wanna learn how to play the violin. =)
