Read Zone: The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I heard about this movie sometime in June of this year (of course dehrrr). It actually made me curious on what the story is all about and of course how Emma Watson would dig the American accent.

When the book was released, my former students were raving about the book. They weren't specific on what's to rave about it, as they all said, "Awesome book!"; "I love it!"; "Must-read!"

I wanted to tell them "Ladies, you can be specific naman what the fuss is all about... Hehehe!"

Good thing there's IMDB. Phew!

From there (ah such wonder to instant what's-the-movie-all-about scenario), I checked on the trailer. It was actually cute. At that moment, the coming-of-age vibe was prevalent and it made me feel more excited to watch it.

Yesterday, I so wanted to watch the movie because I had a strong feeling that the last day of showing was last night. I spontaneously asked people around, but apparently they:
  • Just couldn't because of previous commitments
  • Felt that it was so last minute
  • Saw the movie already
Fine. Instead of sulking on the missed opportunity, I just bought the book. I started reading it from my way home until I reached my bedroom. Awwww it was so nice! Just like what I experienced when I read The Da Vinci Code, I couldn't let go of the book and I just didn't stop. There were no complex or discombobulating words, as the prose were simply placed well yet it was straight to the point. It was actually an easy read.  Aside from the coming-of-age, I think the book nicely projected about family togetherness, celebration of friendship and the mentorship between a teacher and a student. My type of story.

So ladies and gents, yeah, just like The Da Vinci Code (which was like 6 years ago) I finished it in one sitting last night. Yeahhhh.

I also realized that the book revolves on good music. My friend watched it and he said that The Smiths were once again put in spotlight, just like 500 Days of Summer. He also said that the soundtrack's really awesome, which is why I'll download it, as soon as I have time. He added that "Heroes" by David Bowie (I was in awe when I listened to it) topped it all. Hehe! But in the book, there's this part where Charlie gave a mixed tape (yeah the setting was in the 90's) to Patrick for "Secret Santa" (aka Yankee version of Kris Kringle), which contained the following songs:
  • Asleep by The Smiths
  • Vapour Trail by Ride
  • Scarborough Fair by Simon & Garfunkel
  • A Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum
  • Time of No Reply by Nick Drake
  • Dear Prudence by The Beatles
  • Gypsy by Suzanne Vega
  • Nights in White Satin by the Moode Blues
  • Daydream by The Smashing Pumpkins
  • Dusk by Genesis (before Phil Collins was even in the band! --> that's how it was written)
  • MLK by U2
  • Blackbird by The Beatles
  • Landslide by Fleetwood Mac
Told my mom about the book and she was like (she's so cute how she described it) "Ah mga wallflower, yan yung mga nasa tabi lang diba? Hindi nilalapitan?" Then she demonstrated how a wallflower looks like. Hahahaha! My mom and her comedic antics.

I should watch the movie. But since it provided a kick start to read (after months since I read Wicked, which was last March), I hit the books again to enrich my literary needs. :-)
